Key Locations
Letchworth Garden City
Whether you are planning a vacation to the place with family/friends or just looking to enjoy a day out, Letchworth Garden City has something to offer for everyone. Being the world’s first deliberately planned garden city, the place has been designed to combine the best of urban and rural life. It offers a number of interesting places to explore.
Sites such as the Spirella Building and The Cloisters are fascinating works of architecture. The town centre throws up the perfect mix of attractions with specialist shops, a range of places to eat and drink from independent coffee shops to well-known restaurant chains, an art deco four-screen cinema/theatre, the International Garden Cities Exhibition, an arts centre, and regular farmers’ markets. The more outgoing visitors can enjoy a round of golf at one of the town’s courses or relax and refresh themselves at the Outdoor Pool.
A number of fascinating green open spaces and walking greenways are there to soothe the soul. These include the Broadway Gardens (with a magnificent fountain at one end), Howard Park (with a paddling pool and play area for children), and the Norton Common (home to Muntjac Deer and the famous black squirrels).
Hitchin
Hitchin is a beautiful market town with so much to offer. Incredible history, an amazing shopping experience with an abundance of independent stores, a fantastic food and drink scene and entertainment, art and culture for all. There’s something for everyone in Hitchin. History is all around with many ancient buildings and the magnificent Church in the centre (St Mary’s Church is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire), one of the largest outdoor markets in the region, museums, theatres, and gorgeous outdoor spaces. Venture just beyond the town and you’ll find more delights including the popular Lido and gorgeous Lavender fields.
Bancroft Recreation Ground has been providing a place of relaxation and leisure for Hitchin’s residents since before the Second World War. The park houses many specimen trees, shrubs and flower beds, and also supports a bowling club, tennis club and during the summer months, a popular Splash Pad which is free to use.
Windmill hill is a large hill in the town centre, formerly known as Rawlings Hill, named after a previous owner of the mill that used to stand on the top and which burned down in 1875. With seating at the top, you can see for miles over the church, the town and the lavender fields beyond.
Baldock
Baldock is a historic market town in the North Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England. The River Ivel rises from springs in the town. The small market town of Baldock was founded by the Knights Templar in 1140
Since the 16th century, Baldock has been a centre for malting, subsequently becoming a regional brewing centre with at least three large brewers still operating at the end of the 19th century,
Baldock is a town with a curious history. Today, it is a small market town with a population of just over 9,000 people, choked by traffic and in commercial decline. Its character is overwhelmingly Georgian. Yet in the fourteenth century, it was one of the wealthiest towns in all of Hertfordshire and in the first century BC, it was the first town to develop in the region.
Baldock boasts a museum, war memorial, a popular iconic church, local pubs and many restaurants.
